The hearing into Manchester City’s alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules kicked off on Monday. City have been charged with 115 offences, stemming from a four-year investigation, and referred to an independent commission back in February 2023.
The Premier League claims City broke financial regulations between 2009 and 2018, but City firmly deny all accusations. The club insists they have a "comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence" to support their case.
At the heart of the matter, the Premier League accuses City of failing to provide "accurate financial information" on matters such as sponsorship income and operating costs. City are also accused of not fully cooperating with the investigation.
City have called the allegations "entirely false," pointing out that they originally surfaced in the German newspaper Der Spiegel through what they described as the "illegal hacking and out of context publication" of emails.
Since their 2008 takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group, Manchester City have won eight league titles, multiple domestic cups, and the UEFA Champions League.
The private hearing, expected to last around 10 weeks, is taking place at the International Dispute Resolution Centre in London.
A Case Wrapped in Secrecy
Laura Scott, BBC sports news correspondent, reported from outside the hearing, where there was little to suggest the significance of the case unfolding inside.
Top barristers were seen discreetly arriving, including Lord Pannick, who will lead Manchester City’s legal defence. Pannick is well-known for representing high-profile figures, including the Queen and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. City fans even celebrated him with a banner reading "Pannick on the streets of London" last year.
Pannick, alongside barristers Philip Marshall KC and James Mather, will be making City’s case. Meanwhile, there was no visible sign of Adam Lewis KC, representing the Premier League, who may have entered via a side door.
The outcome of this hearing could be a turning point for English football, but for now, all eyes are on what happens inside the walls of the hearing room.
