Ruben Amorim, Manchester United’s under-pressure head coach, didn’t hold back after his team suffered a 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford. The result marked their fourth home loss in five Premier League matches, leaving United languishing in 13th place with just 11 points from 11 games since Amorim’s arrival.
Speaking candidly in his post-match press conference, Amorim admitted: “We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you want headlines, so here it is: your headlines. We have to acknowledge this to change it.”
A Painful Night at Old Trafford
United briefly found hope through Bruno Fernandes’ penalty, cancelling out Brighton’s early opener. But Kaoru Mitoma’s brilliant finish restored Brighton’s lead, and a calamitous error from goalkeeper Andre Onana gifted Georginio Rutter the Seagulls' third.
Amorim described the team’s struggles bluntly: “Imagine what this is for a Manchester United fan. Imagine what this is for me. We’ve won just two of our last 10 league games. I have full knowledge of how bad this is.”
Are United Truly at Rock Bottom?
While Amorim’s claim about being the worst team in the club’s 147-year history may seem dramatic, the stats paint a grim picture:
While relegation still seems unlikely, Amorim’s warning last month that it’s a "possibility" has only added to fans’ anxiety.
What’s Next for United?
Amorim faces mounting pressure to turn things around in what has been a disastrous campaign. The focus will now shift to stabilising the team, avoiding further embarrassment, and finding a way to salvage some pride as the season progresses.
For fans, however, this season is shaping up to be one of the darkest in Manchester United’s illustrious history.
