Manchester United parts ways with Erik ten Hag due to poor performance, appointing Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager.
Since its proposal as the ’39th game’ in 2008, the idea of hosting regular-season matches abroad has sparked controversy.
Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has now voiced his firm commitment to this notion, expressing his ambition to stage a Premier League match in New York City.
Despite facing strong opposition and abandonment in the past, the concept resurfaces periodically, with Werner being the latest influential figure to advocate for it.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Werner stated, “I’m determined one day to have a Premier League game be played in New York City." He further elaborated on an ambitious vision where matches would span across global locations, envisioning a day of celebration for football enthusiasts worldwide.
Addressing concerns about the potential financial burden on home-based supporters, Werner proposed subsidizing travel expenses to make overseas matches accessible and appealing.
He emphasized, “Let’s figure out a way to offer them very cheap travel (and) accommodations so that if Liverpool is playing Nottingham Forest, we will support fans coming to New York and make this an attractive thing for the fans as well.”
However, Liverpool owner John W Henry expressed a contrasting view in the same article, stating his lack of advocacy or particular interest in the idea.
The proposal has also faced swift opposition from supporter groups like Spirit of Shankly, who vehemently oppose the notion of competitive Premier League matches being played abroad. In a statement, the group emphasized their determination against such a move, highlighting other pressing issues in football that require attention.
Both Liverpool and the Premier League have been approached for further comment on the matter.
